Why Have I Got Psoriasis And Can It be Treated?
What exactly causes psoriasis is not known.
Factors that are present and may trigger cases of the disease include medications and drugs, skin lesions and scars, sun burn, alcoholism, bacterial infections, colds and hereditary.
It may be a combination of these together with environmental factors, the immune system and a genetic disposition.
Despite intensive research the underlying mechanism that triggers psoriasis is still a mystery.
Psoriasis Treatment
For mild cases of plaque psoriasis and inverse psoriasis, creams lotions or sprays applied to the affected areas can prove safe to use and very effective.
An injection of steroids directly into a stubborn psoriasis patch is also an alternative.
In severer cases stronger and systematic medications or injections may prove effective.
Some oral medications may prescribed for certain cases but are not suitable, for example, for women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy within three years.
If any form of psoriasis develops or is suspected, it is essential that qualified medical advice is sought without delay. Most cases of psoriasis can be treated without any side effects
Is Psoriasis Curable?
The short answer is psoriasis is not curable! It can disappear only to reappear weeks, months or even years later.
However, it can be controlled. Psoriasis is not contagious even if direct skin-to-skin contact is made for a duration, however it is possible that susceptibility to the disease can be passed on by a parent.
There are help and advice centers, with forums, located in most developed countries that can be contacted on line.
In the US the National Psoriasis Foundation will help in finding physicians who specialize in treating the disease from their extensive database.
