Do not just rely on a commercial sunscreen to keep your skin protected from the harmful ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun however good, or expensive, the brand.

Long-term healthy toned skin needs the same sort of dietary discipline and attention as you would give to a physical fitness regime. And nothing works better than nature’s products to slow down the eventual aging or cancerous effect on the skin caused by the suns´ rays

Before Sunbathing

Top up on foods and dietary supplements containing vitamin E.

  • Vitamin E is responsible for the important antioxidants that neutralize free radicals that are responsible for skin cancers. Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays produces these dangerous free radicals.

Foods that contain Vitamin E are colorful vegetables and fruits such as green broccoli, red cabbage, tomatoes, avocados, asparagus, spinach, sweet potato, blackberries, bilberries, almonds, hazel nuts, brazils and peanuts, cod roes, canned tuna and most vegetable oils. Green tea is an excellent and healthy source.

The more of these foods rich in Vitamin E you consume in the run up to and during the sun tanning season the more your skin health will benefit in both the short and long term.

During Sun Bathing

Visit your local pharmacy and purchase zinc oxide or titanium oxide creams.

These are naturally occurring minerals and many commercial sunscreens will contain one or the other, or even both, together with other chemical ingredients.

They work by reflecting the sun’s harmful rays before any free radicals can oxidize and damage the skin.

They act immediately they are applied and last up to two hours and are not easily absorbed into the skin, unlike commercial labeled sunscreens. The downside is that because they lie on the surface, the skin appears to be white.

A small price to pay to keep your skin looking young and healthy for years to come!

Year Round Skin Care to Prevent Sunburn

Before and after exposure to the sun remember to keep up your year round skin care procedures. Skincare products containing vitamin A are a daily must as they stimulate the collagen production that keeps the skin looking firm and keeps wrinkles at bay.

Apart from the regular morning and night time applications smooth a little vitamin A cream into your face before patting on a sunscreen.

If you are unfortunate enough to get burned by the sun, not a lot can beat the sap of an aloe plant for soothing the pain. They are easy and quick to grow in most temperate climates and it is simple to cut or snap a piece off and gently rub the sap that exudes onto the affected area.
It can be bought over the counter at the pharmacy as Aloe Vera.
