Exposure To Sunlight Prevents Signs of Aging

SunshineEvery holiday season the media makes sure that we are aware of the dangers of sunbathing. Magazines and TV carry ads for a large variety of sunscreens purporting to prevent sun damaged skin. Is it any wonder then that some of us become so scared of the dangers that we take every precaution to avoid exposing any part of our body to the sun for more than a few moments at the most?

As with so many facets of our daily lives creating the right balance is the key. Exposure to sunlight can be good for us and prevent the signs of aging, such as wrinkles or fine lines on the face, and age related illness, not over doing it is the key.

British scientists have found that people with low levels of Vitamin D intake or who avoid sunlight are biologically five years older than those with higher levels of the vitamin.

Around 90% of the body’s absorption of vitamin D comes from exposure to sunlight, the remainder from foods such as fish, eggs and breakfast cereals.

The study goes on to say that about one third of the British population are likely to suffer from vitamin D deficiency which can lead to hundreds of thousands of people becoming ill with life threatening ailments.

At the same time around two thousand skin cancer deaths occur annually in the UK.

It is only logical to conclude that the same ratios will be more or less repeated in the US and other countries around the world.

It only takes a short time in the sun to provide the body with sufficient vitamin D, less than the time taken for even the fair skinned to start to redden up or burn.

The answer is to take care to prevent sun damaged skin by using a sunscreen with the appropriate SPF number for your skin type and do not avoid the sun altogether. A diet of foods rich in vitamin D or supplements will also help in keeping the tell tale signs of aging at bay.
